Established in 2010 as an affiliate of the Métis Nation of Alberta, the Rupertsland Institute (RLI) Métis Centre for Excellence was incorporated as a Section 9 company under the Alberta Companies Act on July 26, 2010.
Our three mandates are education, training and research.
RLI’s vision is for a skilled, knowledgeable and self-reliant Métis Nation and is integral to enhancing the self-sufficiency and well-being of Alberta Métis through quality education, training and research.
Since its creation in 2010 and in support of its vision and mandate, RLI has been developing programs and services that embrace the principles of:
- Labour market self-sufficiency
- Informed decision-making
- Strategic partnerships
- Lifelong learning
- Enhanced accountability
The Beginning of Rupertsland Institute
In February 2010, the Métis Nation of Alberta’s labour market development program evolved into the Rupertsland Institute – Métis Centre of Excellence
Rupertsland Institute (RLI) was assigned, by the MNA Provincial Council, a triple mandate concerning education, training and research. Shortly after, RLI became a signatory to the Aboriginal Skills Employment and Training Strategy (ASETS).
In 2011, RLI negotiated the creation of the Rupertsland Centre for Métis Research (RCMR), an academic centre at the University of Alberta.
