In 2012, RLI became the educational authority over Métis education in Alberta, by mandate from the Otipemisiwak Métis Government (OMG, Formerly the Métis Nation of Alberta).

We partner with MNA leaders, community, and citizens for many different projects to serve the Nation. As an affiliate of the OMG, RLI is accountable to its sole shareholder – the Métis people of Alberta – and to our federal and provincial governments funding partners. RTL is committed to empowering educators to develop and apply foundational knowledge about Métis, as outlined in Alberta Education’s Leadership Quality Standard (LQS) and Teaching Quality Standard Competency #5.

The Beginning of Rupertsland Institute

In February 2010, the Métis Nation of Alberta’s labour market development program evolved into the Rupertsland Institute – Métis Centre of Excellence

Rupertsland Institute (RLI) was assigned, by the MNA Provincial Council, a triple mandate concerning education, training and research. Shortly after, RLI became a signatory to the Aboriginal Skills Employment and Training Strategy (ASETS).

In 2011, RLI negotiated the creation of the Rupertsland Centre for Métis Research (RCMR), an academic centre at the University of Alberta.

Formerly known as the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA).

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is a strong Métis Nation embracing Métis rights. (Oh-teh-pim-swak: The people who own themselves).

In 1928, Alberta Métis began organized to advance Métis self-determination and self-government in the province, leading to the creation of the Métis Nation of Alberta. In November 2022, Métis citizens overwhelmingly ratified a constitution to establish the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. In September 2023, the first election under the Otipemisiwak Métis Government Constitution was held. The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is now the government of the Métis Nation within Alberta and is recognized as such by the Government of Canada through a self-government agreement signed between the parties in 2023.
